Taking on epic adventures across Rwanda and Uganda, the specially prepared overland Safari Range cars, based on classic air-cooled donor platforms, completed a diverse 8,000-kilometre round trip through extraordinary landscapes as part of two once-in-a-lifetime 10-day expeditions.
Equipped with chunky off-road wheels and tyres, roll cages, underbody protection and robust suspension, the unique Beyond Adventure fleet turned heads as drivers from around the world joined the journeys in September and October 2023. Participants from Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Singapore, Taiwan, Spain and the USA formed two KALMAR Beyond Adventure convoys, each tackling an environment that few sports cars have ever attempted.
Flanked by purpose-built second-generation SUV conversions, the Safari Range cars began the tours after the Beyond Adventure crew had already navigated solo from South Africa through Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania to the starting point in Kigali, Rwanda — a challenging 4,000-kilometre trek through extreme African conditions. From there, four customer crews drove on two occasions to Entebbe in Uganda, experiencing the Nyungwe Forest Reserve, Lake Kivu, and the Volcanoes and Bwindi National Parks, home to the famous mountain gorillas that delivered on the KBA “Gorilla Guarantee.”
The expertly curated routes and border crossings, managed by the KBA team, ensured smooth logistics and allowed participants to fully immerse themselves in the adventure. Jan Kalmar said: “The African Highlands are like no other place. The people and culture are amazing, the scenery is fantastic, the wildlife is beyond imagination. Driving the best roads is not enough. We aim to create the best experiences possible in places where people think they cannot go by car. That is the purpose of KALMAR Beyond Adventure.”
