Arrive in Delhi, where new and old meets: bullock-carts and cars; hand-pulled trolleys and trucks; Western fast food cafe’s and roadside golgappa ‘watery Indian bread’ carts; buses and rickshaws; suits and traditional Indian wear. As Delhi is the gateway to the rest of the country, it will be the starting point of your Beyond Adventure Himalaya India. You will be met by our team at the airport from where you will have a transfer to the Jim Corbett National Park. The shuttle will take some time due to distance but mainly because of the Indian traffic. Enjoy the “madness” and learn about their traffic rules from the comfort of your shuttle. Delhi is a truly cosmopolitan city and set to leave a long-lasting impression on you.
In the afternoon you arrive to the Jim Corbett National Park - home of many animal species and your home for the next days. Here your vehicle is waiting for you and the Beyond Adventure welcome dinner takes place. Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
Total KM: 260
Welcome in the heart of the Jim Corbett National Park named after the legendary hunter, conservationist and author Jim Corbett. The park is India’s first one, established in 1936 as the Hailey National Park, it was renamed in 1957 in honour of Corbett who played a key role in its establishment. Situated in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, the park is primarily a protected area for the critically endangered the Royal Bengal Tiger of India, which is also the main objective of the Project Tiger Reserve Scheme of 1973, an Indian wildlife protection initiative.
Today get an introduction to the world of the tiger. You will be driven into the park by local rangers as the spotting starts.
These cats are wild elusive animals living in its natural habitat so there is no guarantee, however we will do all we can to spot them. The park is much more than tigers. You will have the opportunity to spot leopards, deer, langur monkeys, wild boars, peacocks, spotted deer, crocodiles, sloths and Himalayan black bears and the biggest of them all - the elephants.
Total KM: 0-50
Today will be an early morning start, as we will go deeper into the park again in the Ranger’s cars to observe the wildlife of the area in the company of a local naturalist. Even though the park has more than 100 tree species, about 450 species of plants and around 50 mammals, the main aim of today is still to spot the most magnificent one - the Bengal Tiger.
After lunch in the lodge, we head back for the afternoon game drive where we add to the chances of spotting the tigers. We work with a team of spotters to increase the probability of finding those magnificent wild cats.
Before dinner, relax and take your time to prepare yourself for the upcoming days behind the steering wheel of the Beyond Adventure vehicles.
Total KM: 10-50
It is time for you to steer your own vehicle into the truly amazing India, aiming for the top of the automotive world. First stop is the city of Rishikesh which is located on the banks of the holy-river Ganga. It is the Uttarakhand gateway to the majestic Himalayas. Home of prominent temples, Rishikesh is considered as the holy city for Hindus.
With the Shivalik range of the Himalayas and the bustling river Ganga, it is an attractive destination for adventure seekers with river rafting, bungee jumping, camping, mountain climbing, hiking and trekking. And the relatively short driving day does give you the time for these optional activities if you feel like it.
Total KM: 200
Today an early start is needed. You head towards Shimla, famous for its natural beauty and tranquility and one of the most picturesque towns in north of India. It is characterized by snow-capped hills, lush green valleys, rivers, dense forest and cool pleasant weather. The distance might seem short, however hairpin and narrow routes need time to be passed. But the views and hospitality of this former British colony town will take your breath away.
Total KM: 290 (9hrs)
The long journey to Shimla deserves a day of leisure and relaxation in this scenic and spiritual place. Enjoy a spa treatment in the hotel or feel free to explore what the area has to offer like neo-Gothic architectures dating back to the colonial era, as well as multiple temples and churches.
Total KM: 0
After an early breakfast you will get back into your vehicle to work your way forward. Expect magnificent views of beautiful hills with farms, apple orchards and pine forests.
The destination point is Manali - a high-altitude Himalayan “village” in India’s northern Himachal Pradesh state. It has a reputation of a honeymoon destination. Set on the Beas River, in winter is a gateway for skiing in the Solang Valley and trekking in Parvati Valley. It is also a jumping-off point for paragliding, rafting and mountaineering in the Pir Panjal mountains, home to the 4,000m-high Rohtang Pass. The adrenalin level is entirely up to you…
Total KM: 130 (4hrs)
Now starts the real climb into the Himalayas, so take a deep breath! The drive to Rohtang is very scenic with dramatic views consisting of lush green hills, several waterfalls, grazing horses and views of snow-capped mountains.
Your destination - Jispa is located along the River Bhaga, at an elevation of almost 3,200m. The village of Jispa is dotted with several Buddhist stupas - a common sight in the villages of this region.
Total KM: 140 (4-5hrs)
There are several routes from Jispa, however we aim for the panoramic route filled with landscapes of the Ladakh region. Prepare yourself for the most picturesque views of your life!
We are climbing higher and higher but with a low pace to allow your body to adjust to the change of altitude. Reaching our “base-camp” which offers a well-deserved rest after a long journey.
Total KM: 335 (9hrs)
Now we are in extreme altitude of 5,300m above sea level. Take it easy and embrace yourself with the spirit of the Himalayas and start your “spiritual-day” with a visit to the Thiksay monastery. It was built in the 1630 and is one of the most famous, largest and richest monasteries in Ladakh.
Continue to drive to the Hemis monastery, located 45 km south of Leh which was founded in the 17th century and belongs to the Drukpa order.
Dinner and overnight stay is back in “base-camp”where you will also work on your acclimatization.
Total KM: 45-90
Today will be a big bucket list day for you, and it will be breathtaking not only because of the views... but do not worry, we will carry extra oxygen with us for the comfort of your adventure. Drive to Shey & Stok Palace - the seat of power of the first King of Ladakh who constructed the Hilltop Fortress. The monastery is famous for the three-storey high image of Buddha Shakyamuni made of copper gilt.
Continue the drive to Tirith. After 39 km you will cross over the highest drivable road in the world: Khardung-La (5,578m). The view from the top is simply amazing. Take a few moments on the automotive top of the world with the thin air, before you start the descent back into oxygen area! Maybe you still have power left to visit the Basgo Fort, Lamayuru, Alchi and Likir monasteries before a long day ends back in the town of Leh.
A unique adventure has been added to your list, and we will enjoy a traditional farewell dinner before you put your head on the pillow thinking of the last 10 days of diverse experiences.
