The goal is to make the car dance: Jan Kalmar’s exclusive driving course includes a personal trainer and a minimum of six hours of driving time per day per participant.

The course takes place on a 110-hectare area of ​​lake, bog and marshland 200 km north of the Arctic Circle in Levi, Finland. In mid-January, the sun rises at 11:15 and sets at 1:00, so most of the course takes place in darkness.

The temperature this morning during Bil Magasinet’s visit is minus 26 degrees, and the air is crisp as organizer Jan Kalmar opens the door to the heated garage, where his mechanics are getting six classic Porsches and their accompanying cars ready for the day’s tasks.

The frost seeps in like a mist along the floor before the gate rolls down and the six young technicians wearing black Kalmar uniforms are greeted.

The smells in the garage have something organic about them, with the combination of unburned gasoline, sweaty exhaust pipes and fog on the windows, and there are expectant smiles on the faces of the participants while the mechanics adjust racing seats and harnesses individually.

The cars on the course are classic, air-cooled 911s, lifted and equipped with roll cages and racing seats. They have manual transmissions and no modern safety features other than ABS brakes, and it provides a wonderful first-hand experience of how petrol cars sounded and behaved 30 years ago.

There’s plenty of power in the 3.6-liter, 6-cylinder boxer engine with the characteristic raspy sound, and the well-prepared youngtimers have no problems with the extreme cold…
