If you know the Porsche world, chances are you’ve come across Brock Keen and his @996roadtrip. Brock has spent years travelling and camping in his 2004 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S (996), showing that a 911 can take you much further than most people would ever expect.

While in the Alps, Brock got the chance to spend some time behind the wheel of our Beyond Adventure RS-7. Afterwards, he shared his thoughts—and we couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

“Of all the mountain passes I’ve been lucky enough to drive, Klausen Pass early in the morning might be my favourite. If you stay at the hotel, the odds are incredibly high you’ll wake up to the happiest Swiss dairy cows doing their best Will Ferrell impression. You might think opening your eyes at 5 a.m. to the sound of cowbells would be obnoxious, but I promise you—when you’re here, it’s charming.

Once you’re charmed, grab a quick espresso (doppio, please) and head to the car. Fortunately for me, the car was one of KALMAR Automotive’s magical Safari builds, and this one was prepared for the road.

To be honest, the smooth asphalt roads of the Swiss Alps didn’t seem like the ideal place to put this car through its paces. But here’s what I discovered: KALMAR might have created one of the best daily-drivable safari/rally-inspired cars on the market.

The RS-7 was as soft and comfortable as I wanted it to be, and with the push of a button, its TracTive suspension became firm, composed and completely predictable. It was a joy to throw into corners, let the rear step out slightly, and then trust the voodoo of the 911 chassis to keep everything pointed in the right direction.

Driving deeper into the mountains, I eventually found some cow-free farm roads winding through the valleys. Those gravel sections offered a brief glimpse of what these cars are truly built for. From what I could tell, covering a few thousand kilometres across Africa would be no problem at all.

Fingers crossed that one day I’ll find myself in Namibia, piloting a KALMAR build through the kind of safari environment it was made for.”
