An Adventure Beyond the Ordinary

The very first KALMAR Beyond Adventure Mount Etjo Specila PILOT in Namibia has just come to an end and it could not have gone better. What began as a pilot adventure turned into something truly unforgettable for everyone involved.

We always exceed the expectations, and this time we created an experience that goes far beyond a normal safari. Not just watching wildlife from a vehicle, but actually getting a deeper understanding of nature, conservation, and the people who dedicate their lives to protecting these incredible animals.

This is the only adventure, which is not focused on driving, however we couldn’t skip driving at all: all guests got their vehicles and could explore the Mount Etjo vast territory.

Adventure Beyond The Ordinary

One of the most extraordinary moments of the trip came when guests were invited to witness a real conservation operation involving a leopard. The animal was safely tranquilized so that a tracking collar could be fitted — an important tool used by conservationists to monitor and protect wildlife. Standing just a few steps away from such a magnificent animal was an emotional moment for many in the group, and something very few people in the world ever get to experience.

The adventure continued from the air as guests joined helicopter flights over the vast wilderness around Mount Etjo. Together with a wildlife veterinarian, they followed conservation work as an elephant and kudu were safely darted and fitted with tracking collars. Seeing this work happen in real time gave everyone a completely different perspective on what conservation really looks like.

Another powerful moment of the trip was witnessing the relocation of several male rhinos within the reserve — an important step in maintaining healthy populations and protecting the species. Guests were able to follow the operation by helicopter and watch as the animals were carefully handled by the veterinary team before being transported safely to their new area.

These kinds of experiences are exactly what make this Beyond Adventure so special. It’s not about standing on the outside looking in — it’s about being allowed to see and understand the real work happening behind the scenes.

But the journey wasn’t only about wildlife. Guests also explored the famous prehistoric dinosaur tracks in the mountains near the lodge, walked through beautiful landscapes, and visited the local clinic and village to learn more about life in the surrounding community.

One of the highlights was a helicopter drop-off deep in the wilderness, followed by a guided walk back through the landscape. It was a chance to truly slow down and experience the African environment up close.

Throughout the adventure, wildlife continued to surprise us — from elephants and lions to a rare sighting of golden wildebeest running across the plains, along with an incredible variety of birdlife.

Evenings were just as memorable as the days. Beautiful dinners were set up in unique places, stories were shared around the fire, and the group quickly became more like a small community than a group of travelers. That may actually be the most special part of all.

This first pilot adventure proved that the idea works. By combining real conservation experiences, wilderness exploration, and meaningful local connections, it creates something that feels far more personal and authentic than a traditional safari.

And judging by the smiles, the stories, and the many “see you soon” heard at the farewell dinner, this is only the beginning.
